Ambling through the avenue of marigold orange stalls and children darting between devotees and foreign visitors alike, the sun illuminates the haze of the white blanketed sky. The bustling streets of Kathmandu and its energy fade away as the sacred grounds of Shree Pashupatinath or Pashupatinath Temple, on the banks of the Bagmati River, loom ahead.

And despite the goings on, he sat quietly on a stoop, away from the crowds- unannounced and unnoticed until our departure.

Stepping through the gates, the air is heavy with the fragrance of incense and the hum of devotees whispering prayers. It meanders through crowds, the charismatic Sadhus and most importantly- the funerary processions preparing to farewell their loved ones on their final passage into the Bagmati, onwards to the Ganges and into the Bay of Bengal.

And still he sat. Distinguished by his serene composure. Calm, gentle, welcoming- simply offering a blessing and a warm smile, with no ask in return.

But an offer of chai- accepted.
