mEMORIALISING Lázaro - the master craftsman
Lázaro Inácio Costa was born in the municipality of Campina Verde-MG Brazil, in 1934, was raised on the farm Fazenda Fortaleza de Baixo. A farmer, he married his wife Maria Marques in 1968 and went on to father two children- Ricardo and Regina.
From a young age, he lived a subsistent lifestyle, where families grew and harvested their own food, made their ox carts, tamed their oxen and horses for work, crafted their own gates and fences, braided their lariats or lassos as they are also known, reins, whips, and ropes, and the women ginned and spun cotton for various uses, including fabric production with a loom.
With the increasing demand from neighbours, friends, and even farmers from more distant places, Lázaro, known for the meticulousness with which he crafted his products (generally used in cattle and livestock management), began to be in high demand for his services. It was from this that he sought to perfect his craft, seeking out renowned masters of the 50’s and 60’s who taught him new skills that helped him become a skilled braider of lariats/lassos.
He passed away at the age of 82 in 2016, leaving behind several examples of braided and twisted lariats/lassos made from cattle leather and deer hide, fences, corrals, ox carts, residential wooden structures, gates, and fences scattered wherever he went or at the residences of the families who hired his services.
